What are the odds? 6 ton satellite falling, will it hit you?

Huge defunct asteroid is going to fall to the earth faster than NASA anticipated. 1 – 3,200 chance someone will be hit!

uars-satellite-artist-conceptA NASA satellite which was decommissioned in 2005 after completing its mission is coming home a little sooner than expected. NASA projected the  1/2 ton satellite to crash this year somewhere in early October but now it looks like late September.

When it will fall: “Re-entry is expected Sept. 23, plus or minus a day. The re-entry of UARS is advancing because of a sharp increase in solar activity since the beginning of this week,” NASA officials wrote in a status update today (Sept. 16).

Where will it hit: Unknown  – The debris is expected to fall over a swath of Earth about 500 miles.

What kind of Damage: Could be very bad – The satellite is expected to break up into 27 different pieces, so instead of hitting the earth like a sniper bullet, it’s going to hit like a shotgun blast. 6 tons of debris traveling at 5 miles per second over a 500 mile radius.

Odds a person will be hit: 1-3,200 according to NASA. Those are pretty bad odds considering there are billions of people on the earth.

Basically the safest place on earth while it rains NASA litter is in space. Does anyone have Richard Branson’s number?
